Is Your Factory Ready for an EPD? Take the Free 40-Point Checklist

EPD readiness checklist for UAE manufacturers by EnviroLink

A contractor asks for your EPD. You say yes. Then your team asks, “So where do we start?”

That moment catches many UAE factories off guard. The good news? You can find out how ready you are in about 10 minutes.

We built a free 40-point checklist for exactly this. Download it below, tick your answers and see your score.

What Does “EPD Ready” Really Mean?

Being ready for an Environmental Product Declaration starts with clear markets and products. You also need 12 months of factory data. Then add one project owner and a plan to use the EPD in sales. Ready factories finish faster, pay less and face fewer verifier questions.

Readiness isn’t about perfect records. It’s about knowing what you have and what’s missing.

So a factory with gaps can still be ready. It just needs to see those gaps early.

The checklist covers 40 simple yes-or-no checks across 5 areas. Each check comes with a short note on why it matters. At the end, you add up your score and see where you stand. It’s free, and you can print or share it.

Here’s what’s inside:

  • 6 pages, easy to print or share
  • 40 quick checks with a “why it matters” note
  • 5 readiness areas that cover every part of the project
  • A simple score with three result bands
  • Clear next steps for any score

What Are the 5 Readiness Areas?

The checklist splits EPD readiness into five areas. These are markets, product rules, data, team and suppliers, and sales. Each area has 8 checks. Together, they show if your factory can start now or needs some prep first. Most factories finish all 40 checks in about 10 minutes.

AreaWhat it checks
1. Market readinessWho needs your EPD and why
2. Product and rulesProducts, product rules and program
3. Data readiness12 months of factory records
4. Team and suppliersWho owns the work and who helps
5. Sales readinessHow the EPD will win you orders

Let’s look at why each one matters.

1. Market Readiness

First, you need to know who asks for your EPD. Buyers, contractors and EU importers often want different things.

For example, EU buyers expect EN 15804+A2 results. Local green projects may accept other routes.

2. Product and Rules

Next, you pick your products and their product rules, called a PCR. You also choose a program to publish with.

A wrong choice here can mean rework later. So this area deserves real care.

3. Data Readiness

This area usually takes the most effort. You need 12 months of material, energy, water, waste and output records.

UAE factories often hold most of this already. It sits in DEWA, ADDC or SEWA bills, fuel logs and purchase files.

4. Team and Suppliers

An EPD needs one clear owner. That person collects data and answers consultant questions.

Suppliers matter too. Their data or their own EPDs can lower your final result.

5. Sales Readiness

Finally, think about how you’ll use your EPD. Put it on your website, in your spec pack and in every green tender.

An EPD that sits in a drawer wins nothing. So plan its use before you start.

How Do You Score Your Readiness?

You score your readiness by ticking each check you can answer “yes” to today. Count your ticks for a total out of 40. A score of 30 or more means you’re ready. A score of 20 to 29 means you’re nearly there. Under 20 means you should prepare first.

ScoreResultWhat to do
30–40ReadyStart now. Expect a smoother, faster project.
20–29Nearly thereFix your gaps first, mostly in data and team.
Under 20PrepareStart with data and a data owner. Check again in a month.

Here’s a useful tip. Your lowest section shows where delays will happen. So fix that area first.

Picture a Sharjah tile maker that scores 24. Its weakest area is data, with no sub-meters on its kilns. It fixes metering first. Then it starts its EPD a month later and finishes on time.

Why Should You Check Before You Start?

Checking first saves time, money and stress before your Environmental Product Declaration begins. Most EPD delays come from missing data, unclear rules or no clear owner. A quick readiness check shows those gaps before you sign a contract. Then you can fix them early instead of paying for delays later.

Here’s what a readiness check helps you avoid:

  • Paying consultants to wait for your data
  • Picking the wrong product rules
  • Missing a tender deadline
  • Rushed answers to verifier questions
  • An EPD that nobody in sales uses

So 10 minutes now can save you weeks later.

What Do UAE Factories Usually Miss?

Most UAE factories miss the same few items on the checklist. Sub-meters, supplier data and a named data owner top the list. Many also forget to plan how sales will use the EPD. The good news is that each gap has a simple, low-cost fix.

Here are the gaps we see most, with a quick fix for each:

Common gapQuick fix
No sub-meters on key linesAdd meters to your biggest energy users first
No supplier dataSend a short data request in week one
No clear data ownerName one person and give them time
Unclear buyer needsAsk your top three buyers what they accept
No sales planAdd the EPD to your spec pack and website

So you don’t need to fix everything at once. Start with the gap that blocks you most.

How Should Your Team Use the Checklist?

Use the checklist as a short team exercise, not a solo task. Bring together production, finance, purchasing and sales for 30 minutes. Go through each section together and agree on honest answers. Then note who will fix each gap and by when.

Try this simple meeting plan:

  1. Print one copy per person. Everyone scores on their own first.
  2. Compare your scores. Discuss any answers that differ.
  3. Agree on one final score. Be honest, not hopeful.
  4. Name an owner for each gap. Set a date to fix it.
  5. Score again in a month. Track how far you’ve come.

That way, your Environmental Product Declaration project starts with the whole team on board.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an EPD readiness checklist?

An EPD readiness checklist is a quick self-check. It shows if your factory can start an Environmental Product Declaration. It covers your markets, products, data, team and sales plans. You tick each item you can answer yes to. Then you add up your score to see your gaps.

Is the EPD readiness checklist free?

Yes. The checklist is a free 6-page PDF for UAE and GCC manufacturers. You can download it, print it and share it with your team. It takes about 10 minutes to complete. It costs nothing, and you can score as often as you like.

What score means my factory is ready for an EPD?

A score of 30 to 40 out of 40 means you’re ready to start. A score of 20 to 29 means you’re nearly there. Fix a few gaps first. Under 20 means you should build your data and name a data owner first.

What if my factory scores low?

A low score isn’t a problem. It simply shows where to focus. Start with your lowest section, which is often data or team. Name one data owner and gather 12 months of records. Then take the checklist again in a month to track your progress.

Who in my team should fill in the checklist?

Ask your plant manager or sustainability lead to fill it in. They should check answers with production, finance, purchasing and sales. Each team holds part of the picture. Working together gives you a more honest score and a clearer plan.

What should I do after I complete the checklist?

Fix your weakest area first, then gather 12 months of factory records. Confirm which rules and markets your buyers need. Finally, book a scoping call with an EPD expert. That gives you a clear timeline, a scope and a quote for your factory.
